The book is of more interest in South Africa where it is Africana and was the subject of the Masters Thesis of a well known professor of History at Pretoria University. My wife finds the book very funny - he clearly loves his co-warriors but is well aware of their weaknesses, quirks and foibles. Therefore rated at 5 stars.
The book is unique in that other books written by authors on the Boer side was mostly by educated men who were normally also higher ranking officers while Grand-dad volunteered to remain in the ranks. He came to South Africa as a volunteer but with degrees in law and returned to South Africa 20 years later to become a professor of Law at Stellenbosch University.
I am Afrikaans speaking and has the same name as the author and am busy correcting the original from copies of the book that I have, since the scan is quite bad in the Dutch version. I am also translating into English using a voice recognition program.
